AN EVENING ADORNED WITH FASHIONS FROM SOME OF CALGARY’SFINEST DESIGNERS, GOURMET TREATS, AND AFFECTION FOR CALGARY'SNEWEST AND TINIEST STARS.

THE CAUSE

Even though the Newborn Needs campaign has concluded, our fundraising efforts for Calgary's newborns are ongoing. With a high number of critically ill and preterm births in Southern Alberta, these vulnerable babies often need the advanced care provided by the Calgary NICUs. As the population grows, the demand for such specialized care increases, necessitating top-notch equipment and innovation to offer the best support for these tiny patients and their families. Mercedes-Benz Country Hills remains dedicated to supporting Calgary families navigating the challenges of NICU life. This year, proceeds from our fashion show will support Calgary’s Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) to support the well-being and flourishing of our youngest citizens and their parents.

With your support, we have raised over $200,000 over the span of three events, which helped the Calgary Health Foundation cross the finish line to meeting its fundraising target of $66M for the Newborns Need Campaign. 

OUTCOME OF NEWBORNS NEED CAMPAIGN WILL BE:

  • The redevelopment and expansion of Southern Alberta’s only in-born level 3 NICU for the care of the smallest and sickest babies.
  • The introduction of a Care-by-Parent Room at the Level 2 NICU at South Health Campus, designed to help parents gain confidence in caring for their newborns with medical support close at hand.
  • The provision of equipment for the newly established Maternity Care Centre and Level 2 NICU at Peter Lougheed Centre.
  • The creation of a Pediatric Emergency Pod at South Health Campus to offer a childfriendly environment for emergency situations, mirroring the experience at the Alberta Children’s Hospital.
  • The creation of the NICU Simulation Lab at Foothills Medical Centre, giving the care team a safe space to practice for any situation, from the routine to the highly complex, without any risk of harm to real patients. Calgary is home to world-class leaders using simulation training to improve patient and family-centered care for every baby in the NICU.

MEET OUR HEROES

Madelyn, Finley & Charlotte

Shane King and his wife Tanya faced an overwhelming situation when their triplet daughters, Madelyn,Finley, and Charlotte, required care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) right after their birth on a warm July afternoon. While all three girls faced health challenges, Finley's were the most severe, including a self-healing heart defect and prolonged jaundice treatment. After 12 days at Foothills Medical Centre and a subsequent transfer to Rockyview General Hospital, Madelyn and Charlotte were discharged, althoughFinley needed more time in the NICU. Now five years old and thriving, the triplets are excited to participate in the Mercedes-Benz NICU Charity Fashion Show on October 5, showcasing their fashionista spirits.

Sophia

Pamela Abboud's daughter Sophia was born at just 23 weeks, weighing only 657 grams. Despite doctors' concerns about her viability, Sophia proved to be a fighter from the start. After an emergency birth at Foothills MedicalCentre, Sophia was immediately taken to the NICU, where she spent over four months. Pamela, who endured a significant blood loss requiring transfusion, was reunited with her daughter after 12 hours. Sophia recently turned one in April 2024 and is thriving. Pamela and Sophia are participating in the Mercedes-Benz NICU Charity FashionShow, supporting the critical work of Calgary NICUs, a cause deeply personal to their family.
